Who's who at NXNW? We take our food and beer seriously, which is why we have the best of the best running the show.
Brewmaster Donald Thompson is one of the pioneers in the craft brewing movement in the United States. In 1982, Thompson and his wife Mary founded the Reinheitsgebot Brewing Company in Plano, Texas. It was the first microbrewery in the Southwest and the 6th in the nation.
Don first came to Austin to help his friend, Davis Tucker, build the Copper Tank brewery and design the beers. He then designed the brewery and beers at North by Northwest, where Thompson has been brewmaster since the resturant and brewery opened.
Kevin was introduced to craft beer while working at The Bitter End Bistro & Brewery in downtown Austin during the mid 90's. It wasn't long before Kevin brewed his first batch of beer in his college apartment and was forever hooked on homebrewing. After years of bartending and management in local beer-savvy restaurants and bars, he landed a job as a bartender and assistant brewer at North by Northwest in 2007. Kevin is now our Head Brewer but can still be occasionally seen behind the bar at NXNW, tapping a cask on the last Monday of each month.
Mary Thompson is a graduate of the United States Brewers Academy in Chicago. Along with her husband, Donald, she started the first microbrewery in the Southwest. Thompson was the first woman elected president of a district in the 100-year history of the international organization, the Master Brewers Association of the Americas. She has been teaching classes about beer and beer styles for twenty years.
Mary Thompson is also the noted "Queen of Quaff", contributing regularly as a columnist to the Southwest Brewing News.
Davis Tucker has been in the brewing industry for many years...
